Love is in the air

The weather may be cold outside but love is in the air. Valentine’s Day is next Friday, a date night.

One of the things I can’t stand about Valentine’s day are the poorly made teddy bears that are prominently displayed in storefronts especially flower shops. Oversized ones are just obscene. They’re a waste of money and more importantly a waste of space. If you’re going to spend the money, make an effort and go to a reputable shop that sells authentic teddy bears or whatever stuffed animals, and dressed them up for Valentine’s with a red bow or ribbon, or single rose.

Another thing that irks me about Valentine’s day are the boxes of overly sweet assorted chocolates by Whitman’s. There’s just too much variety available to settle on a box of cheap assorted chocolates. And why assorted!? If you know the person you love, you should know what kind of chocolates to get them. And if you’re going to go the way of assorted chocolates, then you should personally select the chocolate pieces at a candy shop or chocolatier. Many candy shops offer handmade chocolates. An alternative to chocolate bonbons are chocolate bars with exotic flavors and ingredients.

When you make an effort to put together a Valentine’s gift the receiver will feel extra loved, and you’ll feel good too. A tailored gift will be more appreciated than something ready made that you grab off a shelf.

If there’s no pleasing your significant other, then they deserve to get a box of Whitman’s. And you should re-think your relationship.
