Not inspired by this automobile ad

When I first saw this commercial, I was like, “WTF?!”

I find these kinds of car ads emphasizing American patriotism and values uninspiring. It certainly doesn’t make me want to buy a Cadillac. I’m embarrassed by American arrogance when it comes to shallow comparisons of how other countries live.

I’ve transcribed most of the questions from the ad with answers of my own. Some people may not like my answers. Leave your comments below.

Q. “Why do we work so hard?”
A. The people who work hard in America are immigrants.

Q. “Other countries work, they stroll home, they stop off at the cafe, they take the month of August off. Why aren’t we like that? Because we’re crazy, driven, hard working believers that’s why.
A. That sounds great! I’d love for America to adopt such a culture, as well as other things. You can be driven and live a lifestyle where we take the month of August off. It doesn’t even have to be the month of August. I’d prefer 4 weeks as opposed to the 10 days.

Q. “Those other countries think we’re nuts.”
A. We are nuts. The fact that Americans don’t always take their 2 week time off is crazy. Not many American companies pay their employees for the vacation time they’re not taking. Some Americans can’t afford to to pay their rent, mortgage, medical bills, food let along vacation. How’s that for crazy?!

Q. “Were the Wright brothers insane? Bill Gates? Less Paul? Ali?
A. Yes, these are examples of people who were driven to be the best at what they were interested in.

Q. “Were we nuts when we pointed to the moon? That’s right, we went up there. And do you know what we got? Bored.”
A. Do you know what’s nuts? There are some Americans who think that we didn’t go to the moon and that it was all staged.

Q. “It’s pretty simple. You work hard. You create your own luck. And you gotta believe anythings possible. As for all the stuff? That’s the upside of only taking 2 weeks off in August. N’est-ce pas?”
A. I agree that with a bit of hard work you can accomplish your goals in life however, to say that taking only 2 weeks off instead of a whole month helps you to acquire stuff is complete nonsense. It would make sense if most Americans earn an hourly wage but they don’t.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some perks to life in America that may not found in other countries but to suggest that other countries don’t work as hard and aren’t driven is just nonsense. Hard work and having drive isn’t exceptional to America only.

  1. Hey Jeannie, I like your post. Companies and their advertising ‘partners in crime’ have perfected the art of delivering nostalgic, sentimental bullshit. These sorts of ads, as well as the ones we see in my country that try and convince you to buy a particular brand of beer (but only if you ‘really’ support the troops) actually end up having the opposite effect to that intended. Nice article!!

  2. Yeah, I don’t care much for any patriotic based ads that’s supposed to influence me to buy their product. Sadly most Americans are easily fooled.
